Brakes

Brakes are one of the most critical systems on a vehicle and consists of around 40 different components. Modern car brakes are operated hydraulically and have brakes on all four wheels. Stopping a vehicle all starts at the brake pedal. When the pedal is pressed, the master cylinder piston is depressed forcing brake fluid along fuel lines to hydraulically activate the pistons in each of the calipers or wheel cylinders. The piston forces the brake pads (or shoes) onto the brake discs (or drums) slowing or stopping the vehicle.

The services we offer:

  • Brake Disk and Pad replacement
  • Brake Shoe replacement
  • Brake stripping and cleaning
  • Handbrake replacement and adjustments
  • Brake pipe and flexi replacement
  • Brake fluid changes

HOW WE CAN HELP

We offer a FREE brake test. This inspection will cover all brake components, including the operation and functionality of the master cylinder, brake servo and handbrake. The tests will be carried out by fully trained and qualified technicians. We will also provide a printout displaying the performance of each independent wheel. This will tell us if there is any imbalance between each braking system.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When to replace your brake pads?

We recommend that brake pads are replaced when the pad friction material is below 2mm. Some cars are fitted with a brake wear indicator wire and if your brake pads are low, it will have worn the wire down and the wear indicator will appear on your dashboard. If your car isn’t fitted with a wear indicator wire, it will have a metal wear indicator on one brake pad on each wheel hub assembly and when that is low you will start to hear a high pitched noise when your car is moving forwards or going round corners. If you’re hearing a scraping or grinding noise from your brakes this indicates your pads are worn that low to the extent that pads have no friction left and it’s metal on metal. This is a serious and dangerous issue.

  • Why do most cars have drums instead of discs on the rear?

Manufacturers deliberately make the rear brakes less powerful that the front. This is because under heavy braking the vehicles weight may come off the rear wheels causing the brakes to lock. This could potentially cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

  • When to replace brake fluid?

We recommend that brake fluid is replaced every 2 years or 20000 miles.
